Imagine this... it's your wedding anniversary. Your wife walks into the house expecting the usual go-out-for-dinner date, when you suggest a romantic night-in cooking together.
You open your computer, pretend to Google a recipe - when SURPRISE (!) a chef who lives in Thailand, Italy, Spain, Turkey, or Japan video calls you on Skype!
Your wife is totally confused - until your private chef says "Happy Anniversary!" After she stops laughing from the shock, your chef begins your private, one-to-one, cooking class. After 2-1/2 hours of cooking together and having a ton of fun with a chef virtually in your kitchen - you and your special someone have whipped up an amazing homemade pasta.
Talk about couples goals.
Over the past years, we've learned just how romantic our clients are. Tons of our clients use The Chef & The Dish Cooking Classes as a surprise gift or date-night for their spouse.
There's a reason YourTango.com rated us "Best 1st Wedding Anniversary Gifts of ALL TIME" and Prevention Magazine rated The Chef & The Dish cooking classes as "Best Fresh Date Ideas".
Here are 10 tips to make your surprise gift huge success.
1. FIND THE RIGHT COOKING CLASS
Take time to look at the variety of cooking classes available with The Chef & The Dish. If it's a surprise gift for your spouse any of The Chef & The Dish cooking classes are perfectly suited to you. We also create custom classes. Find the class you think your girlfriend, wife (or husband!) will enjoy the most. Perhaps she loves fresh pasta? Book a pasta-making class. If you vacationed in Thailand maybe choose a Thai class to relive the trip. Extra special night? Make it lobster, baby! Select the surprise that will give all the feels.
2. MAKE SURE WE KNOW IT'S A SURPRISE!
When you contact The Chef & The Dish to book your surprise anniversary or birthday gift, make sure to let us know it's a surprise! We'll be extra careful to make sure your surprise stays that way.
3. TELL YOUR KITCHEN ASSISTANT SPECIAL DETAILS
We want to make this a surprise your girlfriend or wife never forgets. Prior to your cooking class, you'll have a Kitchen Prep Session via Skype with a Kitchen Assistant from The Chef & The Dish.
During your Kitchen Prep Session you'll review everything you need to make this an amazing surprise gift. Make sure to tell us any special details, and we'll relay them to your chef! Your private chef will use those details to craft a special and totally unique experience for you. For example, if you chose your class because you honeymooned in Italy, let us know! Your chef will make sure to bring up that memory.
4. DETRACT YOUR SPOUSE
It's important to not give away the surprise! Leading up to your cooking class, play down your night and suggest you go for dinner at a nearby restaurant. For a wedding anniversary or birthday gift, this is perfectly suitable, she (or he) will have no idea you're about to pull a last-minute surprise.
Surprise keeping tip: Call the restaurant and make a reservation in front of her. She'll think you're totally booked (just make sure to cancel it right after to free up the restaurant!)
5. GO GROCERY SHOPPING
Before your surprise cooking experience, you'll need to go grocery shopping. Since this is a surprise we suggest the morning of your class. Don't worry gents, your Kitchen Assistant will review your Shopping List with you and teach about ingredients you're unfamiliar with. We'll even call a local grocery store for you or be on text to answer questions while you shop. You can also purchase select groceries on Amazon.com and have them delivered to your office or neighbour to not ruin the surprise.
Surprise keeping tip: Stash the groceries in the back of your fridge or in a closet until your class begins.
6. PICK UP A NICE BOTTLE OF WINE
Your Kitchen Assistant will suggest a nice wine pairing for the cooking class you've selected. Seeing as this is a special occasion, we'll suggest a few different bottles and even check with our wine experts if you're looking for something unique. If cocktails are more your thing, just let us know - we'll send along our chef's favourite cocktail recipes!
7. PICK UP SOME FLOWERS
The day of your cooking class, pick up a nice bouquet of flowers. This is a special surprise, and those romantic touches go the extra mile.Your girlfriend or wife will be shocked at how much thought you put into the night! When your class begins, tell your chef you have another surprise and bring those beauties out!
Surprise keeping tip: Hide the flowers in a closet until your class begins. They will keep for a few hours without a problem. You can also put them in a vase with water and give them to her at the start of the class.
8. OPEN YOUR COMPUTER FOR THE SWITCH-A-ROO
The day of your cooking class, tell your girlfriend or wife you think it would be nice to have a romantic night in cooking together instead of going out. Tell her you'll do most of the dirty work - believe us, she'll think this is so thoughtful and sweet. At the time of your cooking class, open Skype on your computer and then start searching for a recipe on Google. When it's go time, your chef will video call you and say "Happy Anniversary!" (or birthday, or promotion, or just any darn night - because surprising our spouse shouldn't just be reserved for special occasions. ::wink, wink::
